What is the Monitor Button?

Posted on: February 28th, 2012 by admin No Comments

Have you ever wondered why there are times when others cannot hear you on your two way radio? If this happens to you, then you need to check your radio’s monitor button!

monitor buttonThe monitor button is the part of your two way radio that is responsible for monitoring if anyone else is present on the frequency that you are on. To use it, press the monitor button which is typically found on one side of the radio body. It will let you know if there is another user on your frequency before transmitting.

Traditional radios have a monitor button. This is often called a “channel-monitor feature.” The use of this feature is required among radio operators when monitoring the channel prior to transmission. Using the monitor button helps enable clear communication between parties.

Programming the radio’s LED indicators to indicate activity also helps the radio user in monitoring the frequency before transmission. Some radios also have a channel-busy feature which a user can enable when radio is programmed. The “busy channel lockout” helps user get clearer communication because it prevents transmission until it ensures that the channel is clear.

HiTech Wireless offers two way radios with built in monitor buttons to make sure you can communicate clearly in your workplace. Check out our collection of branded durable two way radios and start shopping today!

Beware of False Range Claims on FRS and GMRS

Posted on: August 28th, 2011 by admin No Comments

There’s nothing more hurtful to consumers than being misinformed. Lo and behold, it happens to wireless radios, too. So before you grab one, make sure you get the right information.

In today’s modern world, technology has made it possible to improve features and enhance performance of these two way radios. Over the years, these two way radios have become important equipment in various business settings. Each model in the market has its own unique and special feature which develops as time passes by. The recent models of consumer two way radios are equipped with 22 channels. Out of this, 1-7 channels are shared between the two services while channels 8-14 are for FRS and 15-22 are for GMRS frequencies.

The False Claim

The radio frequency determines the wattage or output power for the radios with FRS frequencies having a maximum allowable power of ½ watt. The operating range for this wattage depends on conditions but can usually reach up to 1 mile. HOWEVER, some manufacturers claim that they get a range of up to 35 miles. Don’t be fooled by these claims because under normal conditions, this would not be possible. Take note that this claim can only happen under “ideal” testing conditions, which does not happen in real life.

What makes this claim false?

GMRS frequencies require FCC licensing which have higher power ratings. For these frequencies, power is up to 5 watts and range is up to 2 miles. If you find radios that claim more than this range, it is most likely that it was tested under “ideal” conditions that include open water settings. These claims are bogus and do not happen under realistic conditions and that they don’t expect that ranges will be higher even if manufacturers claim otherwise.

The idea of GMRS frequencies is that it is a land-mobile radio service for individual and family use. The two-way communication service is available for short distances as a means to assist activities of adults and their family members. Since the system is licensed, members of the family would be able to communicate among themselves in the general area of their residence while doing different activities such as recreational group outings.

Do not use range claims in your purchase decision. Range claims increase every year; however, the radios are the same. Look at the individual features the radios may offer, package deals with headsets, built in Led flashlight, multiple charging options and oversized buttons to name just a few. Also, look for a reputable dealer that does not advertise range claims. If a dealer advertises the manufacturers range claims chances are they know nothing about the radio and if they are not truthful about range claims then you have to question anything they advertise.

With innovations of these 2-way radios coming around, you can find the perfect device that will fit your needs and make effective communication possible with this practical and useful device.
